GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 631476
Use a more generic or descriptive name
Last modified: 2011-08-29 10:12:43 UTC
As we approach GNOME 3.0 and the empathy code is more integrated into the core GNOME experience the separate name and identity is less meaningful. It would be more helpful to use a more descriptive name on the application launcher and GNOME 3 application menu such as "Chat" or "Messaging" or something. We're going to try to make a pretty clear distinction between components that are a) part of the core GNOME UX / shell and b) Apps. Basically, things are either one or the other. In my opinion what is now Empathy should become the standard core component for "Chat". To do so we'll need to change the user visible identity. Some slightly older thoughts on this here: http://blogs.gnome.org/mccann/2009/08/08/whatchamacallit/
As said in bug #592737 we should avoid mentioning "IM" in the GenericName.
As discussed on IRC, changing the Name tho "Chat" would violate the desktop spec. The Shell should display the GenericName if the component is a core GNOME one. I have a branch changing Empathy's GenericName to "Chat" and marking it as a core component: http://git.collabora.co.uk/?p=user/cassidy/empathy;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/desktop-631476

For the record bug #642964 is doing this change in gnome-menus.

Regarding https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642964#c8 should we WONTFIX this? Should we still change the GenericName from "IM Client" to "Chat" ?
Closing for now. Please let us know if there still changes needed.
