Description Hylke Bons 2010-10-01 17:03:40 UTC
The contact link dialog as shown here:
looks very complicated and has a lot of unneccassary elements which make it look crowded and hard to scan. I also don't think the flow is as good as it could be.

I attached a mockup of a possible simpler solution.

This is definitely a bit cleaner. Thanks!

One detail to note is that all the elements in your mockup are Individuals which may have multiple Personas (eg, IM contacts). In the current dialog, those are shown on the left side, and the Personas are shown on the right side.

So the new dialog would hide some of these details. But that's probably a Good Thing, since what the dialog is meant to create a "complete person" as easily as possible, not make fine-grained decisions about which specific pieces of a person you want to pull together.

Guillaume, what do you think?

I really like the mockup. I think a big part of the difference is that the search field is actually visible--it's not obvious to new users that typing in the contact list will start a search.

If nobody from the Empathy team has time, I'll see what I can do.

Also note that we should be able to fill in the "Suggestions" section soon, thanks to bug #646948 :)

Cool. Feel free to ping me on irc or #gnome-design when you get to it, so we can sort out any problems the design may have. :)

So, I obviously haven't had time for this one :)

If anyone from the Empathy team is interested, please go ahead, run it by #gnome-design, then at least one of us from the Folks team will advise on the final code.

Empathy now relies on gnome-contacts to link contacts. Please re-open and re-assign this bug to gnome-contacts if it still applies with a recent version of gnome-contacts.
