GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 631046
Music tracks on my iPod don’t appear in Music in banshee, only in playlists.
Last modified: 2020-03-17 08:58:29 UTC
Created attachment 171456 [details] Screenshot showing the problem. I’ll attach a screenshot showing the problem.
Note that the music appears and plays fine on the iPod itself, and I can play tracks within Banshee by using the playlist.

After restarting Banshee, all the files now appear in the Videos section on the iPod. I’ll attach a debug-mode log.
Created attachment 171457 [details] Debug mode output. Note the errors like: [6 Debug 17:32:33.205] Encountered a problem processing: file:///home/likewise-open/BGTDOM/amauer/.gvfs/hawke%E2%80%99s%20iPod/iTunes_Control/Music/F26/DZRR.mp3 [6 Warn 17:32:33.205] Caught an exception - GLib.GException: Operation not supported by backend (in `gio-sharp') at GLib.FileInputStream.QueryInfo (System.String attributes, GLib.Cancellable cancellable) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 for every file on the iPod.
I’ve found that this works fine on a machine running Ubuntu Lucid; the problem appears on a machine running Maverick.
I'm unsure what could cause that "Operation not supported by backend" issue. I suspect gvfs/gio/gio-sharp on your 'bad' system but I don't really know how to test or verify that. Maybe someone else will have some ideas?
If I add a file on the Maverick system, it will continue to appear in Music after disconnecting and reconnecting, and is playable on the iPod. Came here to also report that Banshee is incorrectly seeing my music as "Videos". iPod Nano, 3rd generation, 8Gig model. Green. Serial number 000A27001B9A904B. Using Banshee 1.8.0, Ubuntu Lucid, libgpod 0.7.95 (all from the Banshee stable PPA). I *had* been using Rhythmbox (with this version of libgpod) to manage my iPod to this point; it doesn't share the issue. Neither does GTKPod. SO FAR, all of the music on there actually does play just fine on the iPod, and the artwork database is awesomely small (75M for about 3G of music). My problem is that I'm afraid to manage music with Banshee - I just installed 1.8.0 (though I've been using the libgpod version from this repo the entire time), and only am now getting around to trying the new Banshee, and have yet to add or remove tracks with it.
To the date, using Ubuntu Maverick and Unstable PPA for Banshee this is happening to me too. Like 90% of the songs are under "videos". The music is played and displayed like they should in the iPod though... Version: 1.9.0-1ubuntu1~hyper1+maverick
Same problem on Fedora 14 (banshee-1.8.0-10.fc14.i686) with an iPod Touch 2G (firmware v3.1.2): All the musics tracks appears in Video. They also all have the 'locked' icon until I play them. Being recognized as video prevents me from directly edit the tags. The workaround I found is to create a playlist from Banshee in the iPod and add the tracks I want to modify in the playlist.
Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again. See https://gitlab.gnome.org/Infrastructure/Infrastructure/issues/264 for more info.
