With the new transparent purple tooltips, transparent images in the tooltips looks wrong. For exemple, if you hover over a contact in Empathy, if his avatar is transparent (like the default avatar if a contact doesn't have one), the transparent area will be black instead.
Attached is a screenshot.

Not sure that's really an Empathy bug. Which theme are you using? Maybe that's a theme bug?

empathy tooltips transparency

On Ubuntu Maverick, with Empathy 2.32.0 this problem appears not with not transparent background images, but with every contact. In fact borders are transparent, center is not. Look at the attachment, I don't know if it's an Empathy bug, I know that I can see it only in Empathy but maybe there are others application with the same behavior, Pidgin tooltips are not transparent at all, other tooltips on my system are only text and they're regularly transparent.
I can reproduce this bug with all the themes installed by default.

I suspect that's a GTK+ bug. Actually it get worst using latest GTK3: bug #636709
