Description Paul Jakma 2010-09-27 14:11:05 UTC
Evince used to remember the page fit and continuous scroll settings. For varius reason (bug #586841, bug #569450) this support was removed and not added back, so that Evince now on every new document defaults to continuous and "Fit page width".

The problem is that these defaults are arbitrary and subjective. They do not suit everyone. It would be nice if some kind of functionality to set the default (be it globally or on the prior "inherit from last doc" basis) could be put back into evince, to fix this regression.
Comment 1 José Aliste 2010-09-27 14:27:49 UTC
Paul, there is a "Save current settings as default" under the Edit Menu.
Comment 2 Paul Jakma 2010-09-27 14:34:56 UTC
Hmm, in which version? I seem to be running the latest available Evince, i.e. 2.30.3, and I don't see this option under any of the top-level menus :(.

$ rpm -q evince
evince-2.30.3-1.fc13.i686
Comment 3 José Aliste 2010-09-27 14:49:32 UTC
Sorry, I forgot to add that this feature is available from Evince 2.32, which is yet to be released.
Comment 4 Paul Jakma 2010-09-27 14:53:39 UTC
That'd explain it. If 2.32 is a big change and/or dependent on GNOME 2.32, would there be a chance of a backport to 2.30.x?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.
Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
Comment 6 Lalo Martins 2013-06-21 15:34:28 UTC
This problem still occurs with the current version of Evince. Yes there is a “Save Current Settings as Default” option in the menu, but it doesn't work. Possibly duplicate of / related to #606090.
Comment 7 Paul Jakma 2013-06-21 15:50:32 UTC
Ack, I also still see this problem with Evince 3.2.1.
Comment 8 Lalo Martins 2013-06-21 16:10:42 UTC
I still see it with 3.6.1 and 3.8.2 (Ubuntu 13.04, without and with the Gnome3 ppa)
