Description pattydougw 2010-09-26 00:24:09 UTC
I have an Epson RX500 photo printer that I'm using with GIMP. When I try to print an image on a full size page the alignment of the print is incorrect. The printer defaults to a 3mm (0.116in) border that can't be reduced to zero in the normal (non-borderless) printing mode.

When I print a full-page print that has been sized to account for the 3mm margins on all 4 sides, GIMP aligns the image with an additional 3mm margin top and left so the margins increase to 6mm on top and left. The result is the image is skewed on the page by 3mm to the right and downward with respect to the basic 3mm margins imposed by the printer.

When I do the same thing with Photoshop CS and PSP X2 the print is aligned perfectly, so the problem appears to be with GIMP.

I've tried with versions 2.2.17 and 2.6.10 and see the same result, those are the only two versions I've tried.

I also see confirmation of the final result simply by going into a print preview/page setup menu provided by the Epson printer. The offset alignment is visible there in electronic form as well. With Photoshop and PSP the alignment in the preview window is perfect.

Please try GIMP 2.7.4 and report back, we won't fix 2.6 bugs any longer.

Could you please try to reproduce problem with GIMP 2.7.4 or later version and update the bug report with your findings, tia.

Tried with 2.7.4 (on windows) and the problem has gotten worse. If I try to set the print size and other parameters in the Epson printer window, now GIMP crashes. Tried it several times, crashed every time.

the second error message from the crash

this shows the plug-in file having the trouble, but no other information is available. the DOS window that launches with 2.7.4 has nothing to say about the problem.

Ok thanks, needs further investigation. Can anyone reproduce this?

A couple more pieces of information. This bug is also present in 2.6.12. And, the printer on which I'm seeing this problem was moved from an XP machine, on which the first bug regarding the margins was seen, to a Vista machine, on which this latest crash is seen. I'm not sure the Vista drivers for this printer are all that great to begin with. On Vista the printer ink levels are not shown on the computer, like they were on XP. When I asked Epson about that, they said something about that feature is not supported on Vista, because the drivers are part of Windows Vista, so there's nothing they can do about it.

Thanks for taking the time to report and investigate this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GIMP developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.
By upgrading to a newer version of GIMP you could receive bug fixes and new functionality.

Furthermore this bug has already been reported as bug #491230. You might want to enable the 'Ignore page margins' option to achieve better results, if your printer driver offers this option.
