add Author: field to wallpapers

It would be desirable to optionally show also Author: field in tooltip that appears when hoovering over a wallpaper in appearances capplet. The attached (quick) patch does this.

Just wanted to add we'd like this to help provide a space to attribute Creative Commons artists who would like recognition of their authorship.

As discussed today, the right place for attribution is inside the images themselves, through EXIF tags.

We'll add to way to get to it through a right-click menu in the icon view.

GNOME Clocks mockup

Providing the ability to see attribution information for freely licensed artwork seems like a nice thing to have - not only does it help with the actual licensing of the work, but it also communicates our values around intellectual property.

We have a similar issue with Clocks, where we are also hoping to use freely licensed work. Having a popup with with author and licence information seems like a good approach here - see the attached mockup. We could do something similar in the background chooser, with a button in the bottom left corner.

A button with a popup is better than relying on hover, since it will work with touch.

I'd also prefer this to viewing the image in Photos - these aren't a user's photos, but an image that is bundled with the system. And Photos isn't a generic image viewer.

Now that we have Flickr as a source of background images, it would be especially nice to be able to display information about the image, such as the author, licence and source.

One way to do this would be to show a button over the selected image, which would display a popover when pressed:

Comment 7 André Klapper 2021-06-09 16:13:53 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new bug report at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
