What were you doing when the application crashed?
logging in... it may have happened at any time during my woes.  I was upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 with intent to move to 10.04.  The upgrade to 9.10 died and left me unable to boot without using recovery mode.  I proceeded by manually upgrading to 10.04 (via command line).  On first boot after upgrade, this message came up
