GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 629015
Plugging a known mic does not select it automatically
Last modified: 2010-09-14 07:27:26 UTC
On Ubuntu 10.04 1) Plug a mic 2) Select it in the "input" tab of the ubuntu Sound Preferences -> you can see it is recognized (the bars move) 3) Unplug the mic 4) Plug it again RESULT : the mic is not selected automatically, you need to manually select it again in the Sound Preferences EXPECTED RESULT : the mic is selected automatically (first reported here : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/632450 )

Newly plugged in devices aren't automatically selected for playback, or recording, you're supposed to go to the sound preferences, and select them yourself.
Thank you Bastien for your answer. Currently if I plug a known USB headset, it is automatically selected. Is it a bug ? Why do I have to manually select a known mic, but not a known headset ? I don't understand the logic of the behavior you mentionned : I believe that majority of users who plug a mic or headset want to use it right now... after use, if the user doesn't want to use them any more he disconnects them, or unselects them in the Preferences. Is it because some mics (e.g. pink and green types) cannot be automatically detected ? (I only use USB mics). If so, I would understand that it is better to have the same behavior for all types of mics (jack/USB). If this behavior cannot be changed by default, would it be possible to add an option in Preferences to automatically select some mics if they are recognized by the system ? By the way, bug 629016 is not a duplicate IMHO as it is about NEW devices behavior (whereas bug 629015 is about KNOWN mics, I mean mics that have already been plugged in and unplugged before). Regards
