GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 628591
Incorrect English message in Evolution
Last modified: 2013-09-13 01:04:52 UTC
While translating Evolution, I've come across this message, which I believe makes no sense (the "it used just removed folder" or "they used just removed folder" part): #. Translators: The first %s is name of the affected filter rule(s), #. the second %s is uri of the removed folder. For more than one filter #. rule is each of them on a separate line, with four spaces in front #. of its name, without quotes. #: ../mail/mail-autofilter.c:450 #, c-format msgid "" "The filter rule \"%s\" has been updated, because it used just removed " "folder\n" "\"%s\"." msgid_plural "" "The following filter rules\n" "%s have been updated, because they used just removed folder\n" "\"%s\"." I believe it might need correction, or at least explanation of what the string actually means. Thanks!
The same for: #. Translators: The first %s is name of the affected search folder(s), #. the second %s is uri of the removed folder. For more than one search #. folder is each of them on a separate line, with four spaces in front #. of its name, without quotes. #: ../mail/mail-vfolder.c:674 #, c-format msgid "" "The Search Folder \"%s\" has been updated, because it used just removed " "folder\n" "\"%s\"." msgid_plural "" "The following Search Folders\n" "%s have been updated, because they used just removed folder\n" "\"%s\"."
These are message dialogs are presented after the user deletes a mail folder, because whatever it was had rules involving that deleted folder. Perhaps a better wording would be: "<<Whatever>> has been adjusted to account for the deleted folder." I wonder if this is worth a string freeze break...
I'd say it is worth if the original English message is not correct, which means translations cannot be correct either - unless translators figure out what was meant in the original in the first place. I'm no native English speaker, but I believe "because they used just removed folder %s" or "because it used just removed folder" are not correct, or at least sound strange :)
Fixed for 2.31.92 with string freeze break approval from the gnome-i18n team. I used the best wording I could think of but it's a difficult message to convey clearly. Feel free to reopen this if you can think of a better wording. http://git.gnome.org/browse/evolution/commit/?id=d1a67bb5c542b04ac0d6a24019ba9fa010fb1a95
