Description Guillaume Desmottes 2010-08-27 13:35:07 UTC
Empathy 2.32 will (finally) gain meta-contacts support. It would be good to have some words in the doc explaining them, how to link contacts together, etc.

Will try to work on this this weekend, or at least later next week.

Thanks.

Hi,

I was testing this feature today, but I'm not getting how it should really works (I think it doesn't work).

I'm using Ubuntu Maverick (the upcoming 10.10 release), and Empathy is 2.31.90.

So, I have two accounts from the same person showing up in the Contact List: one is a Jabber one, the other a Gmail one.

I select one of them, and click on "Link". The linking dialog shows up: the contact I chose from the Contact List is selected, I select the other one, and click "Link".

But nothing happens. If I repeat the procedure, I still see the contacts as unlinked, and in the Contact List nothing changes.

What should be the expected behavior? Should I see only one contact in the Contact List that can be expanded?

I'd suggest you to wait for 2.31.91 (which will be released today). Meta-contacts aren't properly working in 2.31.90.

Just an update: I'm working on this. I'm waiting for the latest updates to land in a package (do you have a bleeding-edge PPA?) to better document the "unlinking" process, since right now I still have to go through the Edit menu.
Comment 5 Guillaume Desmottes 2010-09-07 07:59:41 UTC
Latest release is in Maverick.
We do have a PPA but we didn't build for Lucid because the package depends on latest versions of other packages.

Hi,

I've added the new topic for linking and unlinking contacts, and have updated other topics to reflect that.
The commit is here:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/empathy/commit/?id=b00c9da7dec0f64eea08e158ca970b483d667d41

If somebody is willing to review it, that would be really appreciated. I don't know if the words I used are the best for describing the feature.

I'm going to ask for a review on the doc mailing list too.

Thanks.

PS: I think I will update a couple of things on the audio and video call topics too, Empathy now has only one icon (the webcam one), not two (the webcam and the mike).

Looks good to me. Thanks a lot!

But you broke the build. I fixed it: http://git.gnome.org/browse/empathy/commit/?id=7f1a6c80a830655a686aea1db7b7eda7ef8fafe0

Dammit!
Apologies for the trouble.
Comment 10 Milo Casagrande 2010-09-11 17:30:41 UTC
I pushed some other changes to the linking/unlinking topic. If somebody would like to give it a re-read, that would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Help looked fine for the time, although it has since changed and so has the merging of meta-contacts.
