GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 627613
Video call from Ubuntu 10.04 with GMail user on Windows 7 - Broken video and lag
Last modified: 2012-06-01 13:20:29 UTC
Created attachment 168483 [details] As described in the bug report, this screenshot how my face appears - Split into two halves with one side reversed Hello there, This is my first time filing a bug in GNOME. So, please pardon my etiquettes. I have already tried to search for my problem but couldn't find it anywhere. So, here goes - Whenever I or person B starts with a video call on GMail (person B is using GTalk/GMail/iGoogle on Windows 7), I can see his video clearly but my own video is 'messed up'. 1) Firstly, my video is split into two halves separated by a thick slanting line. One half is in turn reverse i.e. rotated by 180 degrees. 2) Secondly, when I move around, my friend can see the movement but he can't really see me and there is also a lag of around 3-4 seconds. 3) Though the image is almost illegible, you can make out that Empathy is zooming way too much on my face. I have been using Ubuntu for just over a year (already into my third distro after 9.04 and 9.10), so if you need anything (logs) please clearly specify how I need to extract and provide that info. FYI - I have never tried video chat on the previous two versions Here are the rest of the details which you may find useful - OS - Ubuntu 10.04 Kernel 2.6.32-24 GNOME 2.30.2 Laptop - Sony VAIO VGN-FZ210CE Webcam/UVC Camera - VGP-VCC8 (R5U870) Device ID - 05ca:183b Webcam driver installed from - https://launchpad.net/~r5u87x-loader/+archive/ppa Important - Cheese and the new GMail video chat plugin for Linux work flawlessly with my webcam. I mean the audio and video is perfect. So, I am sure the problem is with empathy or one of its settings. I have the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package installed and I believe all the gstreamer packages too. I even tried to install Empathy from the telepathy ppa but it did not make a difference.
Could you try a video test with gstreamer-properties (package gnome-media) and see how it goes?

(In reply to comment #1) > Could you try a video test with gstreamer-properties (package gnome-media) and > see how it goes? Thanks Guillaume for responding so promptly! Initially I didn't know what 'gstreamer-properties' was. I just happened to try it in terminal and was surprised to see a gstreamer GUI! Anyway, attached are the results of running the 2 tests. Here are some more comments - 1) Default Output test - Other Plugin types - x Window System (No Xv) - Pipeline ximagesink x Window System (X11/Shm/Xv) - Pipeline xvimagesink Custom - Pipeline ximagesink 2) Default Input test - Other Plugin types - Test Input - Pipeline videotestsrc is-live=true Video for Linux (v4l) - Pipeline v4lsrc Custom - Pipeline v4l2src My camera indicator did lit up which means that my camera was activated. Also, in the Default Input test options there is one more dropdown option for device as 'UVC camera (05ca:183b)'. I checked in my GMail video-chat settings and this is what was listed there. I didn't see any difference in the Input test when I ran it by selecting this. Lastly, my gstreamer-media package version - 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
How was the video when testing the video input?
(In reply to comment #5) > How was the video when testing the video input? Hi Guillaume, I could not see any video at all after running the video input test. My camera's green indicator light was nicely lit up though. What I could see is exactly what you can see in the 'Default Input test' screenshot that I attached. No video. Is there anything that I need to do other than clicking the 'Test' button on the Default Input test to be able to see the video too?
Sounds like a gstreamer or webcam driver bug then. Re-assigning to gstreamer.
@GStreamer Maintainers - Haven't heard anything from you since last week. Is there any data/log that you would like me to provide to help you get to the root-cause of this bug/issue?
Abishek, could you try running the application called Cheese and let us know how that works for you? (if it properly records video).
Hello Christian, If you check my initial bug report, I had mentioned that Cheese and video chat in GMail were fine. It is the video calls in Empathy that don't work for me. Having said that I tried to record a video in Cheese again and it went through fine. I am planning to upgrade t Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.04. I will test Empathy and let you know the results on this bug report.
Abhishek: have you upgraded and re-tested now? Does it work now?
