Description Charlie Kravetz 2010-08-15 16:03:33 UTC
This bug has been reported to Ubuntu Launchpad as:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483957

When using gimp-2.6.7-1ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 9.10, GIMP will freeze after a few modifications to an image, most often applying filters such as Drop Shadow. The system will also crash; the mouse is able to move and windows can be moved around the screen, but no buttons or menu items can be clicked. Killing gimp from a terminal does not restore system functionality. Rebooting using telinit 6 brings the system down, but it never reaches login screen. Only a complete power-down of the system allows it to boot normally.

Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia

Package: gimp 2.6.7-1ubuntu1

An update from a second reporter:

The problem of GIMP FREEZING has fully returned in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx.

gimp version: 2.6.8-2ubuntu1.1

It is very annoying and happens usually during use of FILTERS, especially DROP SHADOW.

The point is that it does not happen constantly.
One time it happens with the first photograph,
the other time only until the fifth photo.

Most of the time it causes the computer to freeze completely,
not being able to control any window and to shut down (only the hard way)

I found out that GIMP causes AT-SPI-REGISTRYD to freeze.

I've tried to close down as many applications as possible to see if there is any interference.
But it doesn't have any effect.

BUT WHAT DOES HELP, IS DISABLING OR NOT TOUCHING THE MOUSE DURING THE USE OF FILTERS !
It looks like that (even very subtle movement) of the mouse during running the filter, causes Gimp to freeze.

I hope this will help all of you to run GIMP and to help to rigorously solving this problem.

Ps. GIMP runs perfectly in Windows7.

Can you reproduce this with latest stable GIMP using latest stable GTK+?

Got this on latest Ubuntu Natty 11.04 using Unity with Gimp 2.7.2... Happens every time i try to use the Drop Shadow filter. I am able to move the mouse but nothing happens on clicks. The fans of the computer start spinning fully. The only thing i can do is to either logout with ctrl+backspace or restart with ctrl+alt+delete. I am not sure what log would be appropriate here. If someone could tell me i'll come back with it .

You set "Version" to 2.7.1, but your initial comment has
"Package: gimp 2.6.7-1ubuntu1".

Which version are you actually using?
Comment 5 Charlie Kravetz 2011-05-05 13:00:25 UTC
You are correct. I made a mistake. The original issue was seen with 2.6.7, and has now also shown up in version 2.7.3.
Comment 6 Michael Schumacher 2011-05-06 12:31:41 UTC
"NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia"

-> does this also happen without this kernel module?
