this report has been filed here:

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-monitor/+bug/370727

"When i am connected to the Internet through a local network (wired network) the system monitor on the panel shows the right graph and data which is alright.
But when i am connected to the Internet through mobile broadband connection, the system monitor on the panel does not show any graph of data but when i open the system monitor, it shows network history and graph of data received and transmitted."

"I also use mobile-broadband and am having exactly the same problem. Both the system-monitor and the panel-applet show no network-activity, even when I am downloading. This is actually a big problem for me because it makes it harder to diagnose network-problems."
