GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 626388
Default Banshee Version Cannot Read daap Shares in Ubuntu 10.04 Without Samba Configuration Tweak
Last modified: 2010-11-08 20:23:01 UTC
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and then installed Banshee via synaptic. I am not 100% sure of the version (forgot to note it down and as this is on a dual boot machine and I am currently writing this from Windows). I added the samba configuration workaround to an existing bug at Launchpad, but as I believe Banshee is not part of the core Ubuntu support, I am filing it here as well just in case. "Banshee refuses to connect to DAAP share" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/498697 The text of the entry being: I have this bug and also have I believe a work around. The work-around results from trying to investigate a Rhythmbox bug: Rhythmbox Unable to Play Music from daap share that requires password https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/614294 https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/119602 I was going to report the Banshee bug, but this bug already seems to cover it. My details are: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.04. $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release: 10.0 Two NAS boxes on network: 1) NAS1 - Dlink DNS-323, firmware 1.08 2) WD1 - Western Digitial MyBook World Edition - firmware 01.01.16 with MioNet 4.1.1.9 Both have built in daap (itunes) servers. Both of these servers and their music files can be seen and played under Windows Vista and Windows 7 using either itunes or songbird (with the daap plugin). The NAS1 daap server is setup so that it requires a password to access the server. Both itunes and songbird prompt for this password. WD1 does not require a password. I installed the Banshee music player. Initially this could not see either NAS1 or WD1. After a google search I edited the file: /etc/samba/smb.conf and adding in the [global] section after the line "server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)" client ntlmv2 auth = no Now Banshee was able see and connect to both WD1 and the DNS-323 daap server, it prompted for the password when connecting to NAS1. I was able to play music from both WD1 and NAS1.
I just launched Banshee in Ubuntu 10.04 and it reported it version as: Banshee 1.6.1 Also maybe relevant is the version of the sub package: Banshee.Daap 1.6.0.0
I ran the Ubuntu update manager today, quite a few updates, including apparently various samba related packages. This has resulted in some change in behaviour of this issue. If I now comment out in the file /etc/samba/smb.conf the line: client ntlmv2 auth = no Banshee can now see the NAS box: NAS1 - Dlink DNS-323, firmware 1.08 (The other box is currently not available to try) but it cannot play any music files from the NAS box. Before it could not see the NAS box and hence of course not play any files. However, if I now re-instate the line: client ntlmv2 auth = no it can now play files from the NAS box.
Ok, not sure I follow you entirely -- is there any bug remaining that you think is Banshee's fault?
Closing this bug report as no further information has been provided. Please feel free to reopen this bug if you can provide the information asked for. Thanks!
I can confirm that with a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 (and updates as of 10th Nov 2010) that Banshee connects to the daap share with the default samba settings, a great improvement on Ubuntu 10.04. Note that Rhythmbox is still unable to connect to the daap share in Ubuntu 10.10: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/230583
