When I go into the gnome control center under desktop/theme slector, and then choose a theme from the available themes box, the applet fails with the error "Application "theme=selector-capplet" (process 20695 has crashed due to a fatal error. (Segmentation Fault).

Either from the menu at the bottom or the top select programs/settings/gnome control center and then select desktop/theme selector.  In the theme selector, choose a theme from the Available themse box. Or select
