GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 625128
`Open with ...' -> Use command too
Last modified: 2010-07-24 08:16:25 UTC
When opening a (downloaded) file, the Debian user is often (if not always) asked if he wants to open it, or to save it. The problem is that ticking `Open with' only gives you a list of choices. You can choose `Other' and it directly opens ~/ so that you can select the binary which can render the related file. The problem is that it's * basically easier to write a command, i.e. at the place of `Open with ... Other', it could be interesting to have a box where you can write e.g. `kile' if you want the file to be opened with `kile', etc.; * not often possible for the user to select a binary which is not in his directories.
The Open With dialog in Nautilus has a "Use a custom command" expander, which when opened, will allow you to type exactly the command you want, so I'm not exactly sure what you mean, or if this is even a Nautilus bug. Could you give us a screenshot of what you're talking about?
Sure, for the screenshot. Consider for example images `scsx.png' where `x' is an integer from 1 to 3, at http://www.student.montefiore.ulg.ac.be/~merciadri/to_display/displaycontent.php. At scs3.png, I can choose to type the command that I want, as you specified. But at scs1.png and scs2.png, this is impossible. For information, scs1.png & scs2.png are displayed when using Iceweasel and clicking on a file to download, when scs3 is displayed once I've saved the file on my disk and that I want to open it. Note that, on scs1, a default application is given, but that, in the menu, I can only choose the default application, or another `helper application,' which directly leads me to the directory window.
Your problem is with Iceweasel, not Nautilus.
Okay. I thought the invoked window was coming from GNOME.
