Description dirtyharry3033 2010-07-21 23:58:21 UTC
===========================================================================
OVERVIEW

My Wacom Bamboo Fun graphics tablet does not function correctly with Gimp 2.7.1. I have selected "General" as the Component as I'm not exactly sure where else to put the report.

After enabling "Screen" mode in Input Devices for both WACOM Tablet Eraser and WACOM Tablet Pressure Stylus, and then creating or opening an image, it is not possible to draw with the stylus.

Hovering the "pen" end of the stylus over the tablet causes the Toolbox to rapidly flicker back and forth between the "Paint" and the "Dodge/Burn" tools. The "Tool Options" dock also rapidly flickers. The prompt in the status line also flickers, changing accordingly - i.e. "Click to dodge (Ctrl to burn)" or "Click to paint (Ctrl to pick a color)"

Hovering the "eraser" end of the stylus causes the Toolbox to flicker between the "Pencil" and the "Paintbrush" tools. Other symptoms as above.

If the stylus is pressed firmly on the tablet, the flickering stops and one tool is selected. (Often, the tool icon displayed in the paint window is for the OTHER tool though...) However, as soon as the stylus is moved the flickering between tools begins again and nothing is drawn. If you stop moving the stylus and keep it pressed to the tablet, the flickering stops. Hover it over the tablet again and the flickering resumes.

On rare occasions after changing from "Round Fuzzy" to "Round" brush, touching the pen to the tablet results in a straight line drawn from a single point apparently somewhere far off the edge of the canvas. I cannot reproduce this behavior at will, it appears to occur randomly.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

I have not seen this issue reported, perhaps I am the only one experiencing it? At any rate:

1) Install Bamboo Fun tablet and drivers, ensure proper function with another program.

2) Install Gimp 2.7.1 and enable the Wacom under Input Devices.

3) Create or open an image and attempt to draw using the tablet.
===========================================================================
ACTUAL RESULTS

With both "Eraser" and "Stylus" set to either "Screen" or "Window" mode, Gimp rapidly switches between drawing tools. Drawing is impossible with either end of the stylus.

With either "Stylus" or "Eraser" set to "Disabled" (or both...) drawing IS possible but pressure is not detected by Gimp.
===========================================================================
EXPECTED RESULTS

Should be possible to enable BOTH ends of the Wacom stylus, with a different tool assigned to each as in earlier releases. Gimp should use the currently-selected tool and not rapidly switch between tools. Gimp should detect amount of pressure applied to tablet and behave in accordance with the settings for pressure in the current Paint Dynamics setting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Entering "Input Devices" and setting Mode for either WACOM Tablet Eraser or WACOM Tablet Pressure Stylus to "Disabled" eliminates the behavior described in OVERVIEW. It is then possible to select tools and brushes and draw with the tablet. HOWEVER...

Doing this causes the stylus to behave as a mouse. Pressure sensitivity is not present, though velocity sensitivity is. I have tried with various Paint Dynamics configs, and made a custom config but Gimp does not respond to the pressure on the tablet.

I have also tried "Window" mode with results as described above. Flickering tools and unable to draw with both enabled, and drawing possible with either or both disabled but no pressure sensitivity.

There is nothing wrong with the tablet itself. It works perfectly in Gimp 2.6.4, Gimp 2.6.10 and Photoshop Elements 6.0. However, on the off chance that it might be a driver issue, I updated to the most recent Wacom driver - 5.2.3-4(RC). This made no difference at all.

I have prepared an .avi video displaying this behavior, it is 15 seconds and about 5.2mb in size. If it would be useful and the size is not too large, let me know and I will upload it.

I am new here, accept my apologies if I have posted in the incorrect place or in an incorrect manner or format, or omitted needed information :)

Known problem.

Tablet support is totally broken in GTK+ 2.20, the version required by GIMP 2.7.1.

Is there a good bug number for this 'known issue'. This problem still appears to be an issue.
