Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: gnome-core Severity: normal Version: 1.4.0.4 Synopsis: panel crashes right after startup of X Bugzilla-Product: gnome-core Bugzilla-Component: panel Description: After using the machine using gnome desktop and panel without problems I logged of using the logout option in the 'start' menu. (I do not start the machine us xdm or kdm so start X using the startx command) then shutdown the machine. After restarting the machine and login in I start X using the startx command (redhat rawhide 20011003) configured with gnome. During startup of gnome the panel process crashes. This happende before and learning from that I saved the panel.d tree as that sometimes was corrupted. I tried to restore this tree and restart X again, but panel still crashes. Duplicate. Should be fixed in 1.4.x? George?
Eeek I think it should be fixed. That is there is no code that could crash there. I think this may be corrupted backtrace, I've seen this in a few 1.4 traces. So not sure, it is weird. I'll keep it open for now

My experiences with this problem hint that it is caused by the video driver corrupting the kernel's internal file system structures/buffers, with the result that sometimes the files being accessed during X startup (in particular Gnome stuff) end up with a zeroed block. The block of zeros can be seen with od, but goes away after a reboot. My system is stock Redhat 7.2 (with recommended updates) + NVidia's closed-source video driver on an Inspiron 8100 (NVidia GeForce 2 Go). Different releases of the NVidia driver cause this problem to appear more or less often, with the latest driver working fairly well. - ndb@sns-usa.com

Would be nice to see if thise has been fixed in XFree86-4.2.0? Please try the latest gnome-core and gnome-libs packages too. http://download.gnome.org/ *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 51417 ***
