krb5-auth-dialog fails to open when run and reports the following errors on the terminal:

krb5-auth-dialog: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libhx509.so.4: undefined symbol: oid_id_pkcs3_rc2_cbc

I can confirm this. But I think this problem is a Ubuntu problem dependency with libhx509-4-heimdal.

Indeed it is. krb5-auth-dialog only uses hx509 for pkinit. So as a workaround you can build against MIT Kerberos.
It's a bug in Ubuntu's Heimdal package so closing the report.

The bug has been fixed with an update in Ubuntu.
