Description Allan Day 2010-06-07 17:37:46 UTC
Here's the problem: a user is moving files between two directories, one on her machine and one on a removable drive. The directory structures are the same. The 'root' of each tree is scrolled off-screen in the path bar, making it impossible to tell which window/pane/tab refers to which directory.

I will attach a screenshot demonstrating the issue.

The solution (well, a possible solution): don't scroll the path bar off-screen, particularly the root. Instead, collapse the directories immediatly below 'root' when the path bar becomes too long. I've got a crude mockup that I'll attach.

This is the problem situation: it is impossible to determine the root of a deeply nested directory without scrolling the path bar.

This mockup shows the proposed solution: collapsing the directories displayed by the breadcrumb.

Changing component as part of ongoing bug reorganisation work.
Comment 4 André Klapper 2011-08-11 19:22:00 UTC
Still valid in 3.1.4
Comment 5 André Klapper 2021-06-18 15:16:29 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
