The print dialog should remember the file format (i.e. pdf over ps) and the folder (selectable, but not each and every time), when saving to a file. Furthermore, it should ask for a name (or confirm if empty), instead of just dumping a ".extension" file.

Hi Kenobi,

the support for such functionality is in the gtk+ already. You can find it here: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/unstable/GtkPrintSettings.html#gtk-print-settings-load-file (and below it).
It works well in evince for example (just tested on evince-2.32.0 in Fedora 14).
You should file a feature request against the application which doesn't work as you expect.
