This bug has been reported here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/576825

Binary package hint: gdm

Steps to reproduce:

1. Pick avatar with transparent background for your account, like /usr/share/pixmaps/faces/tennis-ball.png in About Me dialog.
2. Log out or restart computer.

What happens:

At the GDM login screen, the background in your avatar is displayed as gray, instead of being transparent.

What should happen:

Transparent background should be treated as such.

That is intentional it is a matte and frame for your image. It also provides some visual/size consistency between users.

Do you mean this dark gray background over the tennis ball in the screenshot is _intentional_ ?
