Hello,

Currently autoconf script does not use AC_SEARCH_LIBS or any other mean of searching for libm. This is wrong approach as using AC_SEARCH_LIBS or similar will make it possible to determine that a library is not required.

Also, if M_LIBS is used, why not use it in-stead of explicit -lm in:
- doc/examples/Makefile.in
- libxml2-2.7.7/example/Makefile.in
- libxml2-2.7.7.org/Makefile.in

As a result it is impossible to build libxml2 in AIX 5.3, I had to modify M_LIBS to be empty in configure.in and replace all -lm with $(M_LIBS) in Makefile.am.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libxml2/-/issues/
