GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 617737
[volunteer needed] A custom script is needed to improve Orca's support for Ubuntu's Software Center
Last modified: 2010-06-11 08:27:59 UTC
Software center search results are not accessible to orca screenreader users. The '4 matching item' found messages at the bottom status bar are not spoken by the orca screenreader. LP Bug # https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/575691
Why has this been upstreamed, and why is this an Orca bug and not a software-center bug?
(In reply to comment #1) > Why has this been upstreamed, and why is this an Orca bug and not a > software-center bug? This is indeed a downstream issue; and not an upstream Orca bug. Having said that, much of Orca consists of application and toolkit scripts designed to provide more compelling access. We have to do it for official GNOME apps (gedit, Empathy, etc.) and we have to do it for external apps that everyone uses (Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgin, etc.) As a project which was until recently fully funded by Sun Microsystems, we also have a custom script for the OpenSolaris PackageManager, thus the request made by the reporter is not entirely unprecedented. So really, this Orca bug should be an Orca enhancement that a custom script is needed to improve Orca's support for Ubuntu's Software Center. I've just made those changes. I've also marked it as "volunteer needed" because I (the Orca maintainer) do not have the time to provide custom scripts for various and sundry unique utilities created for distros I rarely -- if ever -- use. But I would be more than happy to accept such a script from a community member who really cares about Ubuntu and who can give me reasonable assurances that they will maintain such a script once it is accepted into Orca.
*** Bug 617740 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Ubuntu software center developers like other downstream projects doesn't necessary have knowledge of orca scripting. I filed bug report here incase someone would like to help us fix this a11y issue.
Asking for help for another project is not what Bugzilla is for, but a mailinglist I'd say.
I don't want to seem like I'm trying to tell other people how to maintain their projects ... But it seems to me that having custom Orca scripts for individual applications is not a solution that would scale to a future where Ubuntu (or another OS that Orca runs on) has tens or hundreds of thousands of available applications. So if there's something that Ubuntu Software Center should be making accessible and isn't, please report bugs in Launchpad and we'll fix them. And if there's something in Ubuntu Software Center that Orca could expose to accessibility tools and should in theory but doesn't in practice, fix that in GTK or Orca so it works for every application that does it.
Arky, given that: 1. A member of the release team has suggested this bug does not belong here. 2. A developer from your own distro has suggested this bug does not belong here. 3. I've asked in the community to see if an interested Orca + Ubuntu user would be willing to take this on, and no one has. I am closing this bug as WONTFIX. Sorry! Please work this out downstream.
Thanks André, Joanmarie and Matthew for you valuable comments. I have started looking at software-center code to resolve these issue(s).
