GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 616998
6 new icons: Caps/Num/Scroll Lock statuses
Last modified: 2011-01-12 10:25:26 UTC
As discussed on IRC. Could you please provide the following: kbd-capslock-off kbd-capslock-on kbd-numlock-off kbd-numlock-on kbd-scrolllock-off kbd-scrolllock-on Thanks.
If we really need these icons (do we?), better to go for better names, example: keyboard-capslock-off or just capslock-off
There is (already closed) bug #616380. And it seems a lot of people want that info on the screen. So, yes "we do". I wanted to have a common prefix for these icons. "keyboard" is good enough, just a bit too long - but I do not mind...
I'm not arguing about the need of the aformentioned icons, I'm arguing if we need to ship them with g-i-t or not. I'll happily draw these icons, but I think it would be better to ship them with the keyboard indicator applet, apart probably for the capslock one which could be used in text fields.
Well, I am happy to ship the default set of icons with g-s-d (and actually was going to do that anyway) - but I want other themes to be able to override. Does that make sense?
There's a document outlining how to ship app-specific yet themeable icons with apps if that helps -- http://live.gnome.org/ThemableAppSpecificIcons
Thanks, Jakub, I already implemented that. I put some dummy icons - but would like to replace them with something more appropriate.
Created attachment 176343 [details] key lock status icons Attached are three symbolic icons to indicate the num lock, caps lock or scroll lock is active.
Closing for gnome-icon-theme, these will ship with gsd
Thanks a bunch!
Jakub, what would be the inactive state for those indicators?
In what context are you going to show these? Similarly to keyboard statuses on physical devices, the off state means not showing any indicator, which is what I though would be appropriate here.
Created attachment 176426 [details] LED "replacement" People asked to create LED replacement for keyboard that do not have LEDs at all (it is a common fashion among wireless kbds). So, you see - 3 icons are there, 2 "off" and 1 (CapsLock) "on"
Yea, in that particular case I would recommend not to communicate the off state.
