Description dennis 2010-04-25 13:28:26 UTC
Background:
                    https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2008-October/001816.html
                    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/290126

Further:        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/372132

My small contributions to this discussion have led me to request the following functionality here. As the issue of 'templates' refuses to be satisfactorily resolved through lengthy discussions in their present context I propose the following:
Rather than concern ourselves with adding blank files (as opposed to true templates) to this menu, and which to include and which to leave out etc, I suggest giving users the ability to add functioning app. launchers instead. While I appreciate that I can already add 'shortcuts' to /home/bra10n/Templates, access to these via the menu results in creating a file in that respective folder only.

Scenario: A user wants to type a short message for a house-mate, print and leave on the table...
Proposed sequence: Right click from nautilus, select "Create New", click O.O. Word, *WORD OPENS*, user types message, then prints the document and saves it to the required destination.

The benefits of this proposal;
1. From a one click selection, the document can be created, printed and saved.
2. No need to move the 'blank file' to the required destination manually or delete the 'blank file' from the location in which it was generated.
3. Increased usability and desk polish.

Lastly I do not wish to sound pedantic regarding differentiating template and blank files but it seems confusion (mine?) abounds regarding this.

Please add a comment to bug 558435 instead so everything is in *one* bug report instead of split into several reports.
