Description richard.higson 2010-04-21 10:09:06 UTC
I'm having a problem with gnome-panel-workspace-switcher.
Seen on at least Ubuntu 9.4, 9.10, with an nvidia card. (both tainted & pure ;-)

On my Laptop screen I have 8x1 windows.
This works well, (although I have not been able to name them).
At work I have an external Monitor as well, and would like to
run dual-headed and have 8x1 Windows as well because it has a
larger 24" screen.

I have configured X11 to have 2 Displays.
`echo $DISPLAY` shows :0.0 for the laptop-screen
and :0.1 for the external-screen.

On the ext.monitor (:0.1) I see 2 workspace-switcher-workspaces.
If I edit this (right.mouse -> Preferences) it shows 8x1.
If I change this to 6x1, the main window (:0.0) changes to 6x1, but the
ext.monitor stays at 2x1.

Problem: I don't know what to edit to get the second session to run 8x1 windows.

`gconf-editor` didn't seem to differentiate between different screens.

This MAY or MAY-NOT have something to do with the observation that
"Workspace Switcher Preferences" at first few invocations shows:
( ) show only thw current workspace
(*) Show all workspaces in [1] rows
Number of Workspaces [8]
Workspace Names [
ois
zwo
droi
pfia
pfümpf
sex
siem
ochte]
[x] show workspace names in switcher

(based on above, you could assume that I work in Germany and do my private surfing on screen #6 ;-)

After "a while" the 'preferences' tag comes up with a box asking:
Columns [8]
Rows [1]
[Help] [close]

NB: "a while" feels as though it might be a few days or reboots, but might have something to do with the phase of the moon in conjunction with current
workload modulo current boredom factor. Further observation needed.

I *think* it probably has something to do with the observation that
there appears to be only one instance of:
~/.gconf/apps/metacity/workspace_names/%gconf.xml

I might have expected two at ~/.gconf/DISPLAY_0_0/ and ~/.gconf/DISPLAY_0_1
or some such similar travesty.

Priority: LOW - I can live with this, but it would be nice to know _why_ it came up with just 2 workspaces in the first place, instead of my default 8.

Keep up the good work
