GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 614363
use icons in the recent file list.
Last modified: 2010-05-22 07:21:04 UTC
The recent file list in the File menu should use mimetype icons for easy recognition. We decided not to have icons in menus for 2.28, but it is ok and useful to have them for objects or places. I'd like to suggest using icons there and remove the numbering as it doesn't have any added value.
Well, numbers do have added value: they provide the accelerator for the item, so alt+f, 1 opens the first recent That said I am not opposed to the change, if the HIG will suggest this
just noticed they can be accessed by mnemonics, i had that turned off. the numbers can be kept.

The HIG is in a kind of dead state now because it's being reworked, but this icon behaviour in menu's is generally agreed on by the Usability and Art teams and the reason why it changed for 2.28 See also http://www.andreasn.se/blog/?p=103 on how to force icons to be visib;e.
