Hi,

There is a problem in users-admin gui. I installed a UNR 9.10 to my son's netbook just arrived, and I changed his password : the users-admin gui stated the password had been changed successfully. But when I tried next to open Synaptic, or do "sudo -s" in console to check, the new password had not been registered by the system.

More weird : I created his mail account in Evolution, and the assistant knew the new password but not the old one.

I tried to restart X : same, the new password didn't work to login, I had to give the old one.

I tried a full reboot : same, the new password didn't work to login, again I had to give the old one.

To fix the problem I opened a console and type passwd, then the old password, then twice the new one, and that solved it.

I thought it was a pity that it was not yet fixed in the gui, so I wanted to report it. I tried to take a look in the logs and didn't find anything relevant there.
Bye the way, the launchpad place is very messy and I would not know where to look (branches ? how to get there without reading plenty pages that don't lead me where I need to go ? there used to be a welcome page with just a search field for the key name related to bugs, and the Ubuntu version concerned : it has disappeared ?)
Else, ubuntu-bug tool does not work and I don't know howto report a bug about it : bug-buddy don't want to start with the command:
'bug-buddy --packagel=apport' so I don't know how to report it. I did a screenshot that I uploaded there:
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6108/ubuntubug.png

to be very clear, my internet connection is 1mo Adsl and *works perfectly*. Another person at the #ubuntu chan on freenode could reproduce the bug too.

Best regards,
Joyce MARKOLL

As I said on the Launchpad bug report [1], this is fixed in the development version, Lucid. But please 1) don't report problems specific to Ubuntu to upstream GNOME (Launchpad has nothing to do with GNOME itself), and 2) provide links allowing to go from Launchpad to Bugzilla when you report bugs in both Ubuntu and GNOME. Else people do the triaging work twice.

This bug is actually only hitting Ubuntu, as in Karmic they use a hack to change password by running gnome-about-me.

That said, please continue reporting bugs against Ubuntu and GNOME, as long as you follow the advice I just gave you! ;-)
