GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 612707
menu item "Export" should be better recognizable as save option
Last modified: 2012-12-01 00:07:24 UTC
Created attachment 155972 [details] menu mockup The new "Export" menu item is separated from the other ways to save one's work. That's kind of irritating as is the use of "Export" itself because for a lot of people who just want to edit a photo on the fly presumably "Export" (beside "Save for web") will be the standard way to save their work after editing. It is not eye-catching enough to make clear that it kind of replaced the "Save/Save as" option for "just saving my picture". A way to make more obvious what it does and better point the people to it maybe would be to a) put the menu item "Export" into the same menu range as the other menu items to save one's work as there are Save/Save as/Save as copy/Save for web b) also put a floppy symbol in front of it (also applies to "Save for web") c) add to the menu items what they do (not only in the tooltip): Save -> Save (Gimp format) Save as -> Save as (Gimp format) Save as copy -> Save as copy (Gimp format) Export -> Export (all formats) Save for web -> Save for web (JPG, PNG, GIF) d) maybe replace the floppy symbol for Save/Save As with a Gimp/Gimp mimetype icon (and add it for Save as copy).
Thanks for the feedback, I think you have valid points. Please bring this up for discussion on the gimp-developer mailing list though, our bug tracker is not a forum to discuss GIMP development. Thanks in advance!
Save/Export is such a controversial topic that we can't possibly decide on this change in bugzilla, it needs to go through the UI team and needs proper specifying. If you are still interested, please bring this up on the mailing list. Closing as INVALID, sorry.
