From Ubuntu Lucid WintermeW reports:

Python syntax highlighting vanishes after each file saving...occurs every time a save action is done. The bug apears to occur only with the python syntax highlighter...I tried with a C source code and after saving it multiple times it didn't lose the highlight.

This should be fixed with gedit 2.29.8.
