GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 611169
Add information about container format
Last modified: 2011-04-04 16:30:31 UTC
Hi, when playing a video file, Totem shows some useful information in the Properties tab of the side bar. However, it currently only tells about the audio and video codecs used in the video file, but not about the file's container format. I think it's important to distinguish between codecs and containers and help educate people about the difference. For example, most people believe they can play a DIVX file, although they actually play an AVI file that contains a video stream encoded with DIVX and an audio stream encoded with whatever. IMHO MediaInfo is doing it right [tm], although the UI is of course utterly cluttered, but I think you get the point from the last three screen shots: <http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/ScreenShots/GUI_Main>. Cheers, Fabian
I think it's a great idea to add info about container format. Indicating whether the currently played file is seekable would be good too (correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that depends just on the container format). (this is a general bug, not Windows specific)
Done in GNOME 3.2.
