Setting as GNOME target since that's an obvious option which was working and it seems to confuse quite some users who try to select it and get gnome-keyring unlocking just not working

Thanks. There were several related problems. Please verify that these commits fix the problem:

commit 5358d2e665548c192892accf46b20b2f1d5f1d55
Author: Stef Walter <stef@memberwebs.com>
Date: Sun Mar 21 15:55:51 2010 +0000

[login] Fix various issues storing and using auto unlock passwords.

     * Unwrap secrets directly into login keyring for auto unlock.
     * Fix various corner cases using auto unlock stuff in login keyring.

commit f0d90e4134264367c7c6cd1c2ec9af785d2e9068
Author: Stef Walter <stef@memberwebs.com>
Date: Sun Mar 21 14:24:33 2010 +0000

[dbus] Hide the automatically unlock check when login not usable.

If the login keyring is locked or not present, hide the auto
unlock check box since that option isn't usable.

commit d4e3c0221469f33627c0e294dc12a4d521db91f2
Author: Stef Walter <stef@memberwebs.com>
Date: Sun Mar 21 14:06:43 2010 +0000

[dbus] Allow unlocking even when always unlock is not available.

When the Always Unlock option could not work (due to a missing or
locked login keyring) unlocking a keyring fail when that option
    was selected.

    Fixes bug #610998
