Description Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-07 15:00:38 UTC
Since installing version 2.6.8 (on Mac OsX Snow Leopard), when clicking on the font dialog to choose one, the fonts don't appear in alphabetical order and there seems to be no way to make them appear in that order, making the search for a specific font very hard.
Comment 1 Sven Neumann 2010-02-08 19:41:12 UTC
In what order do they appear then?
Comment 2 Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-08 20:11:19 UTC

I can't even begin to guess (I'm not a pro, you might see a logic to it). They seem to be organized in some way as they appear to be in alphabetical subgroups, but I have no idea on what basis. For example the first three are Hei, Kai, Sans and then it jumps to Arial. And it goes down the list like that, with a group seeming to be alphabetized. Sometimes one is in the middle of two groups (like PilGi which appears between Times and Casual).

I could copy the whole list down if it would help...

Hard to believe since we are sorting the list alphabetically by the names that are shown in the font list view. Perhaps you have a strange sort function in your locale?
Comment 4 Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-09 00:10:10 UTC
What do you mean by "strange sort function in your locale"?
I didn't touch anything but if that's the problem can you let me know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Marie-France

And just to make things a bit clearer, the order is like that in the font dialog as well as the font list view in the toolbox.

A "strange sort function" is used if the alphabetical sort order in your locale isn't e.g. A-Z, but the frequency of the letter as used in the English language.

What about the fonts order in the font dialog or selection of other GTK+-based applications - does it appear in the same way?
Comment 7 Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-10 15:38:30 UTC
The fonts are in that "strange" order everywhere within The Gimp.
I'm not sure what "GTK +- based applications" are (sorry, I'm really not a pro). What I can tell you is that when opening an image from the Gimp (file-open), the list of the items in the window is not alphabetical either (despite the fact that they are in the Finder windows on my computer).
And if I look under the Filter submenus, for example under Filter-Decor, or Filter-Artistic, the items aren't in alphabetical order either...

Hope that helps,
Marie-France

PS: after explanation from my husband, it seems The Gimp is the only GTK based application on my computer, so there's no way to compare.
Comment 9 Sven Neumann 2010-02-10 20:21:34 UTC
What about brushes, gradients, patterns and the like in GIMP? Are these sorted alphabetically for you?
Comment 10 Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-10 23:17:09 UTC
They don't seem to be, no.
Comment 11 Michael Schumacher 2010-02-11 08:26:26 UTC
Do you use a special language (or other locale settings) which has a alphabetical sorting order different from the A-Z ordering that's usually assumed in western cultures?
Comment 12 Marie-France Gervais 2010-02-11 15:03:21 UTC
No. I use the French Canadian (CSA) keyboard. But everything else is standard. And it's organized with the exact same alphabetical order. It's also what I used to use with both Leopard and The Gimp before (before installing Snow Leopard and The Gimp 2.6.8).
Comment 13 rob 2010-03-26 09:08:16 UTC
Having same problem, too.

OSX SL patch state all current. X11 from Apple.
German language environment used here.

In 2.6.6 GIMP sorted fonts in ascending order. 2.6.8 it is totally random. No system behind, that some groups are ordered. It is completely unsorted.
Comment 14 Michael Schumacher 2010-03-26 10:08:16 UTC
I guess that's the same bug as in http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2898204&group_id=211713&atid=1018863

Discussing this there may be more useful if you're getting GIMP from that site.
Comment 15 Michael Schumacher 2010-03-26 11:58:32 UTC
... and the comments there indicate that the problem is not in GIMP. Please check if this has been reported against glib or GTK+ and let's resolve this as a duplicate or reassign it.
Comment 16 Sven Neumann 2010-03-26 21:19:32 UTC
Looks like it rather needs to be reported against the collate implementation of the C library in Snow Leopard.

See Bug #612019 I think
