Bottom line of this discussion is that is would improve the user experience if GnuCash would only allow the user to do anything when a file/db (or "data store" in general) is selected. If GnuCash runs into a situation where no data store is available, it should pop up an Assistant that will allow the user to either open an existing db or create a new one.

This Assistant should pop up in cases such as:
* GnuCash is started with the nofile option with the --nofile option, or for the first time
* The user closes the current data store
