GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 608859
Status messages truncated in tooltip and "Information" dialog
Last modified: 2018-05-22 14:00:31 UTC
Created attachment 152903 [details] Screenshot of empathy displaying bug Sometimes status messages are arbitrarily truncated in the tooltip and "Information" dialog. Status messages are not always truncated. This bug is not affected by the contact's status (Away, Idle, etc.) or the exact length of the status message. Status messages are truncated to a seemingly random length. See the attached screen-shot for an example. I would love to give instructions on reproducing this bug, but as it is non-deterministic, I can't.

Any idea how to reproduce this issue? I typed the same message as the one in the screenshot and it was properly displayed.
I witnessed this bug today and did some debugging to try to figure it out. I finally isolated it to the EmpathyContactWidget. If the Pango word wrap mode is changed from WORD_CHAR to CHAR on the status GtkLabel, the entire message is displayed. With WORD_CHAR (or with WORD), the message truncates. Therefore, it looks like a bug somewhere in GTK+ or Pango. I am using the default theme on Ubuntu Lucid.
The status message that triggered it today (sans initial quote): Deanne's definition of a romantic story (as overheard by Mom): "A romantic story is when the princess gets captured or something and the prince comes and rescues her." The status is truncated after "rescues".
Reopening as I guess the requested information has been provided.
I'm having the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10.
