I'm not really sure what triggers the problem. Affects both integrated and classic UI. Try to resize at small toolbox sizes to reproduce.

There are various bug reports related to gtk-2-18, especially regarding themes, e.g. bug #598299 discourages its use in general. It does not look so bad for me, but there are certainly bugs introduced by the client-side-window work new in gtk-2-18. Without being able to reproduce the artifacts we'll never now.

There is noting to be changed in Dia to fix this. Just use a better Gtk version, maybe the upcoming gtk-2-22 will do better. Otherwise switch back to gtk-2-16.
