Attachment: GIMP - Error Message At GIMP Splash Screen Loading Info.

Hello. I have a bug to report for the program called GIMP v.2.6.7. This same issue also occurs with the later version of GIMP as well, that is version 2.6.8. This issue occurs at every instance when I run GIMP. This is what happens: When I click on any GIMP icon to start to run the program, I get the normal GIMP splash screen to run before the GIMP program interface is fully displayed. Well, as the GIMP splash screen is loading, approximately 1-2 seconds into the loading process, a Windows error message appears over the GIMP splash screen. There is a progress meter bar at the bottom of the GIMP splash screen that stops when the error message appears. The title to the error message states: "file-mng.exe - Application Error". The body of the error message states: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.". I click on the "OK" button in the error message to continue on with the loading of the program. However, the same error message appears instantly again over the GIMP splash screen. I again, click on "OK" in the message. Now, the GIMP splash continues loading and when it finishes, the GIMP program interface appears. Like I said this occurs every time I click on a GIMP icon to run the program.

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled GIMP to see if this would correct the issue. It does not. I have also installed the latest version of GIMP (v.2.6.8) and that does not matter. The same error message appears while the splash screen is loading too.

I have added an attachment of this issue here. Please see the attachment. The attachment is a PDF file that contains an image for to review.

Please reply at: montecarlo1987@lavabit.com at your earliest possible convenience with reason for this issue and possible or known solution(s).

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Troy

Maybe an instance of DLL hell (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLL_hell).

In particular, check if any of the DLL files contained in GIMP's bin directory are located elsewhere. Locations known to cause trouble are system directories (e.g. system32) and GIMP's plug-in directories (some plug-in authors/suppliers think they'll have to place the dependencies there). You should rename the DLL files at these locations if present and then run GIMP again.

Hello,

I wanted to report here on Bugzilla but didn't do it before. I have been using Gimp 2.6.7 for quite some time now, and everytime I open the program I get exactly the same error with file-mng.exe. I simply choose "Close the program" and gimp finishes loading without the plugin. I am using Windows 7 64-bit now, and the same error happened in Vista.

I've just checked what Michael Schumacher suggested about DLL files but I didn't find copies elsewhere.

Also, I googled for that problem and it seems that there are other people having it, but there weren't many results.

Hello! One way for the message not to appear is to delete files "file-mng.exe" and "Copy of file-mng.exe" from GIMP plugin directory (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins).

I get the same error with GIMP 2.6.9 under Windows 7 32-bit.

@Yury: I'm assuming that file-mng.exe serves some necessary purpose, and that deleting it will impair the operation of GIMP in some way. Right?

Maybe an instance of DLL hell (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLL_hell).

In particular, check if any of the DLL files contained in GIMP's bin
directory are located elsewhere. Locations known to cause trouble are
     system directories (e.g. system32) and GIMP's plug-in directories (some
plug-in authors/suppliers think they'll have to place the dependencies
there). You should rename the DLL files at these locations if present and
     then run GIMP again.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but in which location should I rename the DLLs--the GIMP plug-in directories, or the system directories, or both? Won't renaming the DLLs cripple the program in some way? And if the DLLs are in system directories, might renaming them not cripple other programs, if any, that use the same DLLs?

Finally, should I start another bug report for GIMP 2.6.9, or is there one already that I missed? Is there other info that I should post?

Thanks for any help.

Michael, could you address the questions raised in comment #5?
Comment 7 abohl 2010-11-24 23:21:46 UTC
Hello,

I get this same error under Windows Seven and version 2.6.11 of Gimp.
I don't understand why the status of this bug is UNCONFIRMED because I think it is a real vista/seven bug.
I have tested it under XP, and there was no problem.

Another comment : I have not found any dll in my windows folder having the same name as one in the gimp bin folder.

Hello everyone !

Xcuse me for my bad english (my mother lang is french)...

I got the exactly same error message under GIMP 2.6.11 with OS W7 Pro 64 Bit...

But one work around is to launch the file-mng.exe directly from his plug-ins directory.
Copy each .dll missed indicated in the error message from GIMP/bin/ directorie
to SySWOW64 system directorie on your computer. This take some time because all the missing .dll reported as missing are many. Launch file-mng.exe as long as you get a .dll missed

At the last error message (without missed .dll) you get the same error message like reporting on this post.

Simply close the error message and launch normaly GIMP !

You should get no more the file-mng.exe error message at start up of GIMP !!!

That's all

Best regards
Gerard

No no no. Never copy any 3rd-party DLL to the Windows system32 (or syswow64) directory. Doing that is a way to *cause* "DLL hell", not cure it.

Please try GIMP 2.7.4 and report back, we won't fix 2.6 bugs any longer.
Comment 13 Akhil Laddha 2012-02-22 12:29:50 UTC
Could you please try to reproduce problem with GIMP 2.7.4 or later version and update the bug report with your findings, tia.

Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer
version of GIMP.
