GnomeVFS is deprecated, new vfs framework for GNOME and GTK+ application is GIO/GVFS, available from Glib 2.16.0.

Ops, sorry. I didn't see the configuration option in configure.ac

Anyway, maybe the gnome-vfs code could be removed now that gio is the prefered method

I'd call this invalid. No reason to remove compatibility code if the default is sane (=gio).
