Description ikt 2010-01-15 17:40:47 UTC
Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Normally I remove the battery if my laptop is connected to AC to save the lifetime of it. If I do this there is no battery tab in Gnome Power Manager anymore. The battery tab is only shown in battery mode so it is impossible to change energy saving settings with connected ac. Adding battery in ac mode doesn't change anything in gpm but the loading symbol in systray is shown. This happens since Hardy and works fine in all version before. The battery status is shown like before under proc.
I am using a Sony Vaio TX2 notebook.

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: no

I don't understand what you think the bug is.

I don't know if this is related somehow but on my installation the battery tab is not present in gnome power management regardless of the battery state (charging - discharging - removed etc).

Does this bug affect you:

1. Boot up onto laptop, in gpm you will see the 'on battery' tab.
2. Take out the battery.
3. The 'on battery' tab will disappear from gpm
4. put battery back in, on battery tab still missing.

If you do all 4 steps, can you then attach the output of "devkit-power --dump". Thanks.

If you boot up with your battery out, and then plug it in does the battery tab show for you?
Comment 8 João Gomes 2010-10-16 11:04:18 UTC
I have the same problem.

And, in my case, if I boot up with the battery out, and then plug it in, the battery tab doesn't show .
Comment 9 João Gomes 2010-10-16 11:10:55 UTC
I forgot to mention that the battery tab only disappears if I boot WITHOUT the battery on.
And in this case, if I then plug the battery, the battery wont appear.

If I boot WITH the batery, and then I take off the battery, the battery tab will continue to appear in the gpm preferences.

I think the most desirable would be that both tabs, AC and battery, could appear in every case, as one may want to modify the preferences for battery mode even if, in that moment, the battery isn't plugged.
Comment 10 Daniel Convissor 2010-10-17 00:49:25 UTC
This issue impacts me as well. If the battery is out when I log in, the "On Battery Power" tab doesn't appear in the manager interface, even if I put the battery in subsequently. If I then leave the battery in, log out and then back in, the battery tab is there.

Do note, the power manager indicator applet works fine.

I'm on a Lenovo X201 running Ubuntu 10.04.1. I agree with Joao, that the "On Battery Power" should appear regardless. At the very least, the power manager user interface should check if the battery is in or not when being opened.

We don't want to show the battery tab on desktop PCs.

You probably want to try with 2.32.0 preferably without all the ubuntu patches.

Richard.
Comment 12 João Gomes 2010-10-19 23:33:39 UTC
I can confirm that the same problem is present in 2.30 in Debian.
I can report again when I try the 2.32 version.

I can now confirm that this problem is also present in gnome-power-manager 2.32, in both Ubuntu and Debian.

I have an Acer Aspire 7745G laptop, on which I recently installed Ubuntu. However, I've never seen the battery tab, whilst my battery was always in my laptop. The power management just shows "On AC power" and "general" tabs.

"You are using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013."

Regards, Martijn.
Comment 15 Martijn W 2011-01-24 09:07:44 UTC
ps) Ubuntu always shows the plug icon, never anything else (like a battery). Not sure this is normal either.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-power-manager/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
