GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 606944
Apply permissions to enclosed files button provides no feedback that permissions have been updated
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:14:16 UTC
When clicking on the "Apply permissions to enclosed files" button in the "Permissions" tab of the "Properties" dialog for a directory, the permissions set in any of the "File access" drop-down boxes are set correctly on the enclosed files but no feedback is given to the user that the action has been taken and all "File access" drop-down boxes revert to "---". See the bug reported in Unbuntu Launchpad for further details: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/503315 Steps to reproduce: 1. Open Nautilus and navigate to a directory that contains enclosed files. 2. Check the permissions of any enclosed file. 3. Right click on the directory and open the Properties dialog box. 4. Click on the "Permissions" tab. 5. Change the value of any of the three "File access" drop-down boxes. 6. Click on "Apply permissions to enclosed files" 7. Check that the permissions on the enclosed files have been changed accordingly Actual behaviour In step 6, all "File access" drop-downs revert to "---" which makes it difficult for the user to tell whether permissions for enclosed files have been changed or not. Expected behaviour In step 6, Nautilus should notify the user that the permissions have been changed. One way to do it could be to change the value of the "File access" drop-down or to print a message next to it.
how would one know what are the permissions of the folder through a gui method?
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
