Description krislarsen 2010-01-13 20:48:12 UTC
I suggest using the GeoNames database, as it covers almost every city in the world: http://http://www.geonames.org/ (and lots of smaller places too...)

The database is quite large, so maybe it could be optional to download it (using apt), for example in a similar way as Totem downloads media codecs.
Comment 1 André Klapper 2010-01-17 16:29:24 UTC
So do they provide weather data?
Comment 2 Frank Solensky 2010-01-17 18:39:23 UTC
Yes, but downloading entire database isn't necessary. Another way one could work it would be to use a query that maps network address to estimated latitude and longitude, then push that to get weather conditions (see bug #530178, comment #10).
Comment 3 Frank Solensky 2010-02-21 18:03:24 UTC
I'll work on this for an early 3.x release, also use this as the reference for other bugs related to "missing location" bugs in the meantime.
Comment 4 Frank Solensky 2010-02-21 18:05:40 UTC
On second thought: I'll refer discussion to #530178 since that is earlier and has the longer thread. Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.

(Please use Target Milestones instead of the GNOME Target field. Thanks!)
