GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 605509
Accessibility tab: unecessary headings, string issues
Last modified: 2011-07-15 12:44:33 UTC
There are a number of issues with gnome-keyboard-properties' accessibility tab: * The first checkbox is out of alignment with the others, creating an uneven and awkward visual effect. * 'can be' suggests conditionality - it should be more assertive. * 'keypresses' should be two words: 'key presses'. * The use of the word 'simulate' is confusing - it suggests that the checkbox to which it refers has no effect. * 'simultanous keypresses' is not specific enough - it does not communicate which keys are affected by the sticky keys option. The first of these issues can be addressed by removing the headings from the dialog. Their removal can be compensated by rewording the dialogs checkbox labels. The second issue can be solved by using a more assertive statement: 'Use keyboard shortcuts to toggle accessibility features'. These other string issues can be addressed by adpoting the equivalent strings used by the new version of GDM. (This has the added advantage of consistency.) These are: 'Press keyboard shortcuts one key at a time (Sticky Keys)' 'Ignore duplicate keys (Bounce Keys)' 'Press and hold keys to accept them (Slow Keys)' This bug is part of the design review that can be found on the usability whiteboard [1]. An analysis of the existing interface and a mockup of the proposed changes can be found on that page. [1] http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject/Whiteboard/KeyboardPreferences
Slight change in plan! 'Short' and 'Long' should not be italicised. It's ugly, apparently. ;) See the wiki page for details.
I'll close this, it's obsolete. Keyboard and Universal Access were redesigned.
