GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 605401
Each format should have its own package within Gstreamer to make it easier playing songs.

I have been searching for so long for a way to install just the right codec for the right file you're trying to play, but haven't found one yet. Why not create gstreamer0.10-wmv for wmv-files? Of course it's restricted in Non-Free repo, but still it should be called gstreamer0.10-wmv or just gstreamer-wmv.
Restricted-extras is installed, but still it doesn't work to play a wma-file or similar. I did the instructions on this page: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-mplayer-and-multimedia-codecs-libdvdcss2w32codecsw64codecs-in-ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html THAT didn't work. ffmpeg is also installed.
I tried using the w32codecs-package

This is a packaging issue. Distros are free to package and name things as they see fit (and they often do subdivide packages), so please file a bug with your distro about this, it's not something we can help with. If you play a file in totem and the appropriate codec isn't installed, it should (hopefully) bring up a dialog that lets you install it. If that's not the case, there may be a bug or it's a distro issue as well. Again, please take that up with your distro. Same goes for the documentation page. You will likely need the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg package or somesuch, that should play most WMV and WMA formats (but not all yet afaik). For those it doesn't play, there's not that much we can do. You can try gstreamer0.10-pitfdll+w32codecs, but we do not recommend or support that. If you can provide us with a link to a specific media file/sample/stream, we can check if it can be played in our setup and possibly make further suggestions. Otherwise a ubuntu support forum might be of more help.
