Description Pietro Battiston 2009-12-11 08:36:41 UTC
Ctrl+Enter is a very easy combination to press unintentionally, and this can have very unfortunate consequences if for instance it sends an important mail before it is finished, when it is still possibly full of errors, comments...

Just to give a comparison, thunderbird allows the user to set the desired behaviour.

The whishlist wish is hence the following: add, in Evolution's options, the possibility to switch between the following behaviours:
1) Ctrl+Enter disabled
2) Ctrl+Enter -> confirmation -> send
3) Ctrl+Enter -> send

However, the bug itself, which solution I think is really not just a whishlist item, could be solved by just
- quick and dirty: setting the confirmation active by default, with a checkbox "Don't ask again" (it would be suboptimal because hardly reversible), or
- adding the possibility to switch at least between 1) and 3).

--> enhancement
Comment 3 Matthew Barnes 2009-12-12 02:17:21 UTC
Closing this as NOTABUG since disabling Ctrl+Enter is already possible.

1.) Enable editable shortcut keys through GNOME preferences.
2.)  Highlight File -> Send.
3.)  Press Delete.
Comment 4 Pietro Battiston 2009-12-12 08:44:59 UTC
I could say that is totally userunfriendly and nobody would guess it. But this is not the point.

I could say that _still_ I'd like the possibility to have a confirmation dialog as Thunderbird has, so this is at least a valid enhancement request. But this is not the point.

As I clearly stated, the _real bug_ is that this is enabled by default, and can lead to unfortunate consequences (it's not theory, it happened to me several times).

That said, I won't change Status/Resolution, simply because this kind of wars bring only harm, and I currently don't have the time to produce a patch. But I hope you perfectly understand that your reply doesn't at all solve the issue.
Comment 5 Elmo R. 2010-01-14 13:51:34 UTC
I agree with Pietro Battiston. I still don't know how to bring up "Enable editable shortcut keys through GNOME preferences" in Fedora 12. There's System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts, but nothing where it says "File -> Send". I have switched to Kmail for now. It seems like very simple options in Evolution are missing... like using a Trash folder instead of marking the message for deletion. Or the Undo Last Delete function in case you accidentally delete a file. Even if you leave the option defaulted to what people are used to, at least have the option in the program to change it.
Comment 6 Pietro Battiston 2010-01-14 16:05:38 UTC
@Elmo, unfortunately it's slightly more complicated than changing a global GNOME shortcut:
1) go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance
2) click tab "Interface"
3) check "Editable menu shortcut keys"
4) open Evolution, new message
5) click menu File, move over Send (don't click)
6) press Delete

(7) if you happen to do those operations while a GNOME HIGs developer looks at you, prepare a defibrillator, he'll badly need it)

However, Evolution has hundreds of open bugs, so this is apparently too low priority to be considered.
Comment 7 Pietro Battiston 2010-06-08 08:53:44 UTC
If the rationale for closing as NOTABUG is the one in comment #12, I reopen because of (non-)bug #592756 (I laugh when I hear saying bugs are frustrating, because non-bugs are much more).

If instead Evolution developers think that going through gconf-editor to switch the value of a specific key is an admissible solution, please close again and sorry for the noise.
Comment 8 David Booth 2012-03-31 01:48:28 UTC
I also agree with Pietro Battiston. This has bitten me several times. In fact, it has taken several times being bitten by this to even figure out what caused the message to be suddenly, magically sent without my clicking "send".

The bug here is that Evolution is configured with a dangerous default. The default should be to ask for confirmation. If someone hates seeing the confirmation, they can disable it.
Comment 9 David Booth 2012-03-31 01:54:58 UTC
P.S. on my Ubuntu 10.04 I don't have an "Interface" tab when I go to System->Preferences->Appearance, so I still have no idea how to disable this feature.
