GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 603908
Gnome forgets positions of links to NTFS-located files on desktop
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:46:54 UTC
I have several files and directories located on an NTFS-3g mounted partition that I have made links to from my Desktop folder. In previous versions of Gnome (whichever shipped with Ubuntu 9.04 or Linux Mint 7), the icons would stay wherever I placed them. But now, any time I log in, all of these icons are on the left edge of the screen, as if they had never been positioned at all. I have a few other links set up to files on ext4 partitions, and they behave as they should, so it seems to be some incompatibility with NTFS.

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
