GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 603331
Feature request: intel indeo 4 & 5 codec support
Last modified: 2010-03-04 09:05:11 UTC
Binary package hint: gnome-app-install More information: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=Indeo_5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indeo Though Indeo saw significant usage in the mid-1990s, it remained proprietary. Intel slowed development and stopped active marketing, and it was quickly surpassed in popularity by the rise of MPEG codecs and others, as processors became more powerful and its optimization for Intel's chips less important. Indeo still sees some use in video game cutscene videos. Official Indeo 5 decoders exist for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS Classic, BeOS R5 and the XAnim player on Unix. Versions 2 and 3 have decoders in FFmpeg. Indeo version 3, 4 and 5 are supported by MPlayer and XAnim. Version 5.11 is freeware and may be used on all 32-bit versions of Windows prior to Vista. Version 5.2 has been created for XP and is available to buy from the official website[4] for use only with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP. This includes support for Indeo Video 4.5 and Indeo Audio 2.5 codecs but the version 3.2 video codec has been removed since the original release of Indeo XP for Windows. Indeo is not supported and is not compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7 or any Windows 64-bit operating system. There is no codec pack for gstreamer that is able to view this type of file. vlc/ffmpeg displays an error when trying to play this type of file. totem->gstramer->no codec->gnome-app-install gives the following error after looking for a codec: No packages with the requested plugins found The requested plugins are: Intel Indeo 5 decoder Example Media: http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/IV50/indeo50.avi Current result: Only audio plays. Video is not displayed. Expected result: Plays both audio and video in sync. If codec is not installed, suggest proper package. Expect codec to be supported. This bug was create to request IV50 to be supported by gstreamer. If this is not possible due to legal issues or other roadblocks, please define what the issue is with supporting this codec. Tested on: i386, Ubuntu Desktop 9.10, Linux 2.6.31-15
> There is no codec pack for gstreamer that is able to view this type of file. pitfdll [1] should play it (however, pitfdll is made of fail in general, so I would not recommend anyone install it until they absolutely must decode a particular video that can't be decoded otherwise). [1] http://github.com/thaytan/pitfdll/ (the SF repo is CVS and pretty much abandoned) > vlc/ffmpeg displays an error when trying to play this type of file. File a feature request for ffmpeg? (pitfdll is not really a viable solution..)
@ Tim-Philipp Müller gnome-app-install does not propose to install pitfdll. I installed gstreamer0.10-pitfdll 0.9.1.1+cvs20080215-1ubuntu1. The video still fails to play. Are you asking me to open a feature request on https://roundup.ffmpeg.org/roundup/ffmpeg/ or another tracker? I assume this would be a request to include Indeo 4&5 in ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg. Is this correct?
current 0.10.9 pre-releases (and upcoming 0.10.10) include indeo5 support. closing bug.
