I just tried to play a video from InternetArchive (my testcase is: search for
Zeitgeist, and double click on the "Zeitgeist: Addendum" item, then click Play
[>]) and two things happened:

1. The video opened in a new small window instead of switching to NowPlaying.
2. The background banshee's main window left behind the new small window got
frozen (and thus became black&white).

Does closing this small video window crash Banshee? If so, this sounds fairly similar to Bug 548635.
Comment 2 Andrés G. Aragoneses (IRC: knocte) 2010-03-09 18:41:35 UTC
Mmmm, I cannot reproduce it anymore because some weeks ago I changed my codecs (and now I cannot view the video either, BTW, but that's another issue). Can you test yourself please?

I tested with the same video you used - Zeitgeist: Addendum - and it definitely opened the video in a little window. Closing that window crashed Banshee with the same error. Also, the same workaround - visiting the Now Playing section before playing the video - worked in this case as well. I'm marking this as a duplicate because it seems to be a different way to produce the same underlying bug.
