I'm guessing that you recently noticed this problem when you updated your distro (maybe to Ubuntu 9.10?) Several Linux distributions (including Fedora 11 and Ubuntu as of 9.10) are now using devicekit to handle iPods. Unfortunately, Banshee's current way of handling iPods doesn't play nice with devicekit, so iPod support is broken in these distros.

The issue is being addressed in Bug 586508. I'm marking this report as a duplicate of that one. If you aren't using Ubuntu or Fedora, or if that bug report doesn't match your issue, feel free to reopen this.
